IT WAS once considered a novelty fringe sport, played by rich kids at elitist prep schools or at public schools in well-to-do socio-economic areas.

Until recently, it was perceived as a haven for high school spring athletes who couldn't catch up to a fastball or catch up to anyone running on a track.
